It is called ICEland, but somehow it is not that cold! It can reach up to 25 degrees during the summer and the winter temperatures are not often below zero in Reykjavik.
During the summer the island gets green and full of flowers, the weather is pretty mild and it can reach up to 20 degrees in the city. This is the perfect time if you want to enjoy long hikes, the highlands and colorful valleys full of birds. The days are long and the powerful sun reflecting over the glacier is filling you with good energy.
During the winter, Iceland becomes a completely different country. Blizzards, snow storms and forceful wind are back in the country as well as Northern lights, ice caves and frozen waterfalls. This is the perfect time if you want to see the auroras, explore an ice cave, and ice fish.
Good walking/hiking shoes are essential, we always recommend having hiking shoes that are covering and protecting the ankle. Especially for the glacier hikes.
In general, Iceland is cold and windy, so we recommend you to have several layers of clothes, and a big winter coat, then you can take off the coat or the layers if you feel too warm, but as we say here, better be safe than sorry!
It of course depends on your phone company, but a good way to have 4G access and to be easily reachable during your trip is to buy a prepaid local card directly at the airport.
The price varies depending on which package you choose.
In a lot of places in Iceland you will find free wifi, however sometimes we will have a long drive and you will not be able to access the wifi.
Icelandic food is considered as one of the healthiest in the world! Their local dishes with lamb and fresh fishes are really good. The animals are living freely in nature, and the absence of pollution makes their meat tender and healthy.
You can try the icelandic lamb, reindeer steaks but also fermented shark, puffin, and even whale!
Iceland is one of the safest countries in Europe. The crime is pretty low here.
Iceland is almost a cashfree country! It is very easy to pay by cards and apple pay. You do not have to carry cash with you if you are comfortable paying with your credit card, as even the most remote locations accept credit and debit cards for payment.
The Northern Lights are visible only on a very dark night, which, in Iceland, happens from late September to the beginning of March.
The Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field, which is composed of protons and electrons. When a solar explosion occurs, it sends solar particles into space. This collision of the Sun's solar particles with the Earth's magnetosphere causes the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).
You sadly can’t see the Northern lights during the day!
Your eyes will be able to see those magnificent dancing lights only during a dark night with a clear sky.
This is a hard question as the Northern lights are pretty unpredictable, for instance, one of the biggest Northern lights shows happened just downtown Reykjavik city!
Usually, you have more chances to see them in the East and the North of the country as the sky is clearer over there.
You do not have to be fit. To give you an example, we had a 60+, a bit overweight, with a really bad asthma, that went high up on the glacier, (Congratulations Ed!)
The glacier tours are open from 8 years old.
On the glacier, you lose 1 degree celsius. So if it’s a beautiful day with 1é degrees celsius outside, it will be 11 degrees celsius on the glacier.
It can be dangerous, but we are both certified glacier guides and we know all about security on the glacier.
Asbjorn, was also a police officer and a detective for 15 years, he has it in his genes; your security is his priority.
It is always good to have a rain jacket or maybe a waterproof pant to go on the glacier. We highly discourage you to wear jeans or sweatpants that can absorb water easily. The glacier is ice, therefore you will always be a bit wet.
If you have sensitive hands, please take gloves with you :)
We can visit ice caves during the winter time.
During the summer, the ice caves start melting, and even if they don’t melt entirely, they get a lot weaker and therefore it’s dangerous to visit them.
